Redentore 2022

On July 16, 2022, “ Festa del Redentore one of the most heartfelt celebrations for Venetians returns. A tradition that dates back to 1577 when, at the end of the terrible plague that struck the city, THE Venetian Senate commissioned Andrea Palladio to build the Church of the Redeemer on Giudecca Island. It is one of the most famous and revered churches in Venice and the center of one of the most heartfelt popular festivals in the Lagoon and represents one of the greatest architectural masterpieces of the Renaissance: it was finished after the death of the famous architect (1580) by Antonio da Ponte. The church and sacristy are rich in important works, including a lunette by Pietro Vecchia depicting The Virgin.

Every year, on the Feast of the Redeemer, a 330-meter-long votive bridge of boats is built connecting the Church of the Redeemer to the Zattere, the long fondamenta that forms the southern limit of the city of Venice.

This festival, which has become a draw for thousands of tourists today, allows people to savor the more authentic and religious side of Venice; but also the more mundane side, dictated by boat festivities and spectacular fireworks display .The Redentore Festival is certainly the most important moment for the city of Venice and its inhabitants, who gather on the Giudecca shore as early as the morning in order to find a place at the tables that are traditionally set up for outdoor dining.

For boat owners, the Feast of the Redeemer is an unavoidable ritual The boats are festively decorated with lights and lamps of all sorts, while streamers of all kinds adorn the hulls from stern to bow crowning a scenario where the real party takes place: music and dancing all day until late at night; Venetian dishes served on the table in the middle of the boat for an outing that begins for many as early as the morning, touching on favorite places in the Venice lagoon. Final rendezvous in the evening for all in St. Mark’s Basin or in front of the Giudecca.
